Let’s get the basics out of the way. Yes, Steve Harvey messed up. No doubt. He will not be hosting any award shows again – guaranteed (or at least not any time soon). We all feel terribly sorry for Ms. Colombia. How hard that moment must have been.
Okay, now that we have gotten THAT out of the way, let’s get real.
Please people, stop calling what happened at the Ms. Universe pageant a tragedy. Nobody died. There was no brutal act of terrorism. Everybody will survive this mistake. It was an unfortunate event. Period. Let’s not become two-dollar journalists and start over-dramatizing everything.
Secondly, if Ms. Colombia has a good PR team around her, she will take Steve’s snafu and create an opportunity for herself. Had she been named the 1st runner up correctly, no one would remember her at all. Who remembers the 1st runner up? However, with the mistake, she can become the most famous 1st runner up in the history of pageants, if she’s smart.
Speaking of opportunity — who watches Ms. Universe anymore anyway? The shows popularity has dwindled in the last 10 years (even Donald Trump sold the franchise). I have read several comments by readers who said that they didn’t even know that the Ms. Universe pageant still existed. The show has gotten major buzz after Steve’s bungle.
Lastly, let’s talk about Steve. I feel sorry for the guy. He made a mistake. He’s human. Sadly, he made his mistake on T.V. and now because of social media, his mistake will be replayed millions of times. I’m not a Steve Harvey fan, but I empathize with him. I imagine the poor guy hasn’t slept and feels horribly. I’m somewhat put off at the people who are calling him an “idiot” as if they haven’t ever made a mistake.
Like with every mistake, all parties are presented with the chance to become better or bitter; to grow or to allow the humiliation and guilt to stunt them; to learn or to limit themselves. Either way, they are going to be okay. Let’s give this incident the 5 minutes it deserves and move on.
