Mother’s Day When Your Mother is No Longer Here

I hated Hallmark the year after my Mother died.  Actually, I shouldn’t single out Hallmark, I hated all of major companies who seemed to run those sappy, heart-warming commercials continuously in the weeks before Mother’s Day.

Organization Isolation

Edith’s is a place where not much has changed in 16 years. The menu is the same, the booths are the same thick, burgundy fake leather (with a few more cracks), there is still a working jukebox, and many of the employees are the same. When Leslie walks in, they don’t say, “Hi Leslie” they holler “June-y, hey baby!” They know her by her childhood nickname. They know HER. There – at Edith’s – she belongs.

I’m 3rd-grade crushin’, teenage-obsessin’, grown-woman lovin’ me some Beyonce following the release of Homecoming, her documentary chronicling the preparation and her performance at 2018’s Coachella. Now, I am a member of her buzzing Bey-hive — hands sticky from scooping up handfuls of the Black honey she produced.
